There is so much to cover in Idaho politics! Today, we need to take a moment to talk about the Caucus.

Candidate Filings

Today is the Last Day for candidates to file for the 2024 Elections! This includes anyone who is on the May 21st Ballot- From County Commissioners in their Primaries to Precinct Captains.

If you haven’t filed and meant to- drop everything! You can still get your filing done today at the Ada County Elections Office at 400 N Benjamin Lane before 5:00 PM.

In the interest of time, I will not be going over all of the candidates who have filed just yet. If you are interested, check here.

Next week, I will send out the final details. There are a lot of exciting things happening in Ada County this year!

Being a Delegate

This week’s newsletter is really all about the Caucus on May 23rd. Yes, that caucus will be about voting for the Democratic Presidential Candidate. However, it is also about selecting Delegates to represent our communities at the 2024 State Convention! These delegates will travel to the State Convention in Moscow in June to do a ton of important things!

  • Write the Idaho Democratic Party Platform
  • Vote on Resolutions
  • Vote for the Delegates who will represent all of Idaho at the Democratic National Convention

Delegates must be registered to vote, or must fill a voter registration in advance if they are 17. 17 year old delegates must have their 18th birthday before the General Election on November 5th, 2024.

For hotel accommodations in Moscow, contact the Idaho Democratic Party. They are preparing low-cost options to help lighten the burden on the delegates.

Running a Better Caucus

On March 2nd this year, the Republicans held their caucus. They were criticized for having low turnout, shoddy equipment, and unclear timing and directions. While it’s all fun and games to laugh, I must warn you: This could easily happen to us.

That’s why we need to focus hard on preparing for the caucus now. We need your help!

We have an excellent plan, put together by the IDP and Elle Casner in particular. Absentee ballots, Firehose style caucus, and our technical preparations will help us run things more smoothly, but it’s going to take a lot of work to ensure there are no snags, surprises, or embarrassments!

We need volunteers who are willing to learn our check-in process!
We need volunteers to help voters fill out all the forms they need!
We need volunteers to keep watch over the ballots!
We need volunteers to count ballots quickly!

Caucusing

Our plan for the caucus is simple. On May 23rd from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Ada County Voters can go to any of the three Ada Caucus locations to cast their votes.

  • Eagle Middle School
  • Silver Sage Elementary
  • Timberline High School

Caucus voters must be registered to vote – however, they can do so at the Caucus. They may also be 17 year olds who will be 18 before the General Election, in which case, they must still fill out a voter registration form at the Caucus.

Caucus voters must be registered Democrats, Unaffiliated, or willing to change their party affiliation at the caucus to one of these affiliations.

Caucus voters must sign a pledge form promising that they are participating in the Democratic Party Caucus and that they have not participated in another party’s Caucus in 2024.

The State Convention

All of this work culminates in the State Party Convention from June 22nd and 23rd! This year’s convention is in Moscow, Idaho. Delegates from Ada have a long way to travel, and will need to cover their accommodations.

It is really important that Ada County has a voice in the State Convention. We have a total of 198 delegates to send to the convention, which is more than we can usually find. These delegates shape the voice of the Democratic Party.
