Idaho Court Decisions

Reclaim Idaho’s petition went before the Supreme Court this week. If you weren’t following this case, Reclaim sued because Attorney General Raul Labrador drafted misleading and harmful titles for Reclaim’s petitions which would appear on ballots in November of 2024. The Attorney General showed his bias early, stating “let’s defeat these bad ideas” about Reclaim’s petitions.

This week, the Supreme Court UNANIMOUSLY decided to throw out Labrador’s ballot titles. His office will now write new titles, hopefully without as much of the AG’s biases.

Also in front of a Federal Court this week was SB 1100, a new law that would allow people to sue schools if they encountered any trans students using the bathroom. This gross injustice puts a bounty on trans students, who would be stripped of the ability to use public restrooms, and the schools would be forced to police this horrible law or be open to lawsuits which would easily overwhelm their budgets.

The Court has put a temporary restraining order on these lawsuits, halting this bill for now. Personally, I worry that the damage will still be done, and that school administrators will feel too fearful to allow trans people to have access to their human rights in their schools. Until a more permanent decision is made, this law’s harm still looms over trans youth in Idaho.

The Gracie Pfost Gala

In case you missed it, I wanted to share some information about our headliner at NEXT MONTH’s Gracie Pfost Gala.

A North Carolina native, Anderson was elected chair of the Person County Democratic Party in 2021. She knows what it’s like organizing rural counties in competitive states. Anderson started her political activism as an undergraduate at Appalachian State University registering voters. She has worked on congressional and senate campaigns and as a field organizer for Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. She is also a gifted and inspiring public speaker.

I for one can’t wait to hear Anderson’s stories! Let’s make sure to give her an awesome Idaho welcome with a full crowd at this year’s Gala!
